2004 Draft has been completed!
View Draft by Owner
or Draft by Draft pick
Saturday August 28, 2004, the annual BFFL Draft Day
took place at the "usual" place for us XM Radio Headquarters
in Washington, DC. This year we moved back to the Patsy Clien conference
room. This is good for Al Falcons, because the only other time we
drafted from this room, I won the championship. The year when we
drafted in the Beatles conference room it lead to ole Al finishing
in last f-ing place! Thanks again to Jeff for hosting the draft
for the 3rd year in a row!
This year 7 of the 8 owners were in attendance with
only Chuck being AWOL. He has just moved to Hilton Head, SC and
was on the phone via conference call. We all dreamed about going
to Hilton Head for the 2005 BFFL draft, it might be a great thing
to do next year. The draft started out with Greg wasting no time
and picking Priest Holmes with the first pick after he declared
that he hated me for passing out the draft order and handing him
the first pick. I don't believe anyone has EVER won the BFFL with
the first pick.
Troubles
started early for the Snoozers as they picked Peyton Manning
with the 2nd pick. That sent a few surprises through the Bowl Huggers
and Big Blue area of the table, we thought for sure the LT would
be the second pick, but Julian passed on him and let him fall to
Dale with the 3rd pick. Julian seem to be using the Columbo draft
strategy by picking a QB not only in the 1st round but in the 3rd
round as well, picking the Columbo's favorite QB, Bret Favre. WOW!
He must really like to have QB's, because he did not have his first
two RBs until pick 4.07 and ended up with Stephen Davis. Al Falcons
is not real high on Davis this year, that is one reason I drafted
DeShaun Foster at 14.04.
Snoozers Best pick: I really can't find one, but maybe 2.07
Edgerrin James.
Snoozers Worst pick:1.02 Peyton Manning - he could probably
have had Manning in the 2nd round and should have picked LT in the
first. Sorry Snoozers, but Al Falcons thinks your team sucks and
will take the bowl away from me this year.
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 8th Place
As
always, Columbo and the Red Ball Blitz kept things lively.
Every time someone made a pick he would look at one of his 12 sheets
he had spread out and say something like, "Oh Rod Smith, he
only had 3 TD's last year and 846 yds receiving. Then every time
Ed stole a pick in front of the Beavers he would say, "Nice
pick". Jeff's first 3 picks were very solid picks with 1.08
Torry Holt, 2.01 Jamal Lewis, then 3.08 Matt Hasselbeck. Then from
the Columbo school of drafting another QB Trent "Tutu boy"
Green at 4.01. Two QB's in 4 rounds, WOW.
Jeff saved his best move for the 11th round when
he picked Darrius Watts a rookie WR from Denver. Chuck on the phone
with the classic, "Who?" A lot of the other guys had heard
of him, and heard that Watts might be a starter over Ashlie Lelie,
but with the 88th pick? Later Bill chimed in, "He is going
to confess this one to his priest. That will be 500 Hail Mary’s!"
After a few minutes Columbo could be heard muttering to him self,
"God, that was a sucky pick, now I am going to start using
some strategy". Later when Julian picked Olindo Mare, Jeff
said, "He is on the “now you are reaching list."
Then I replied, "Jeff, I got 2 words for you, Darrius Watts".
Watts was the pick that brought up the most conversation during
and after the draft for sure!
Red Ball Blitz Best Pick:7.08 Quentin Griffin
good value for #3 RB, maybe getting Tiki Barber with the 10.01 pick.
Red Ball Blitz Worst Pick: 11.08 Darrius Watts, he probably
could have drafted him in the 17th round not the 11th.
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 7th place. I don't see the Red
Ballers getting to the playoffs this season unless they make some
good free agent moves.
The Spoilers are coming off their worst record
3-12 since joining the league in 1999. Their drafting in this year's
does not lend itself to much improvement. In the 6th round he went
for Mike Vanderjagt K, and then followed it up with Baltimore Ravens
DT in the 7th. Other questionable picks were Michael Bennett 8.05,
out 1-4 weeks with a knee injury, Anquan Boldin, 10.05 who is out
for at least half of the season with an injury as well. Then the
night of the draft Tyrone Calico strained both knees, this leave
the Spoilers with 4 players out of 17 that probably WON'T be available
week 1 to play. OUCH!!!
Spoilers Best Pick: 11.04 Boo Williams TE.
He is a top TE and a steal in the 11th round
Spoilers Worst Pick: 6.05 Mike Vanderjagt K, Way to F-ing
early for a drunk kicker! Also picking RB Ricky Williams (Now the
dope man, previous Miami Dolphin) in the 17th round. Even if Ricky
tries to un-retire, he is facing a year long suspension for smoking
the weed and won't be able to play this year. Wasted pick!
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 6th place
The
tough luck Maruders and their GM Dale got a great gift in round
1 when LaDainian Tomlinson fell to them with the 3rd pick. From
there Dale went on to have a solid, if not spectacular draft. Having
come off this Toilet Bowl Victory from last season he is looking
to improve on this record of only 2 playoff appearances in 9 years
in the league. He will need a little help to make the top 4 this
season, but don't count him out.
Marauders Best Pick: 1.03 LaDainian Tomlinson
- what a steal!
Marauders Worst Pick: Dale got very good value with most
of his picks and he will tell you that he is not thrilled with the
Joe Horn pick, but in the 4th round as a 2nd WR to T.O, the pick
is still pretty solid.
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 5th place, but definately in
the playoff hunt!
The Seminole Nation move to South Carolina made it
the first year that Chuck could not actually be at the draft in
person. He was able to draft over the telephone on the speaker and
picked a very competitive team. He seemed to use the stud RB theory
with 4 RB's picked with his first 7 picks, which may leave him a
bit thin at WR with Moulds, Stallworth and Toomer as his #2 - #4
WR's. The DT pick in the 9th round is not that great, but that is
about all I can say bad about his draft strategy for this year.
Chuck did improve significantly last year finishing 1st in the regular
season and going to his first BFFL Super Bowl. He should be a team
to recon with this season
Seminole Nation Best Pick:2.02 Clinton Portis,
getting Portis with the 10th pick is a steal. In many drafts this
year, Portis was going as high as the 6th or 7th pick. If Gibbs
and the Skins are decent, then Portis will be the anchor to the
Nation this year.
Seminole Nation Worst Pick: 9.07 New England DT. Althought
Chuck had 4 RB, 1QB and 3 WR at this point, in my opinion it is
still way too early to pick a DT in the 9th round.
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 4th place
The
WhoseYourDaddies had the unfortuante luck to have the first pick
in this year's draft and they did not botch the pick by selecting
Priest Holmes. Greg was looking fit and trim this year after losing
over 45 pounds in the off season! The quote of the day went to Greg
in the 7th round.. Ole Al Falcons was at the board to pick Steve
Smith. Bill said, "Steve Scott" and then I said, "Steve
Smith is a lot better than Steve Scott!". That is when Greg
said, "That's is what your wife said!"
Ouch! That one brought the house down! The whole league
had to try to collect themselves after that doozie..
As far as the WhoseYourDaddie line-up goes there are
not too many holes, but I think that Tony Gonzales at 3.01 was a
bit of a reach, as the KC great is bound to have a bad year one
soon. Chris Chambers at 5.01 and Jeff Wilkens at 7.01 are also a
bit iffy. Overall the Daddies picked a good solid team and should
(as usual) be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
WhoseYourDaddies Best Pick: Priest Holmes will
be a monster, but the best pick might be Tyrone Wheatley at 13.01
WhoseYourDaddies Worst Pick: Jeff Wilkens at 7.01, the Rams
will not score as many FG's as you would like from your K. Way too
early to pick a kicker. Do I sound like a broken record on that
one?
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 3rd place
Big Blue, other wise known as Ed is the returning
BFFL Champion. He was "Mr. Serious" at last year's draft
and accused me of being too serious this year becasue I want to
get rid of the pick bowl this year. Blue was drafting in the 5th
slot and had ole Al Falcons steal his picks a few times picking
right ahead of him. My 9.05 pick of Jimmy Smith and 14.04 pick of
Jake Delhomme got under Ed's skin. I can't see too many picks that
Ed made that are really bad, but I personally did not like these,
7.06 Jerry Porter and 12.03 JoeyGalloway. I am sure Ed was happy
to see Sean Alexander at 1.06 in this draft, thank Julian for such
a bone-head first pick!.
Big Blue's Best Pick: 8.03 Kellen Winslow -
you can't go wrong with this rookie who looks like he will tear
it up year 1.
Big Blue's Worst Pick: 7.06 Jerry Porter. He was very hyped
up last year, but turned into a bust, I think he is going to repeat
as a bust again this year.
Al Falcons' 2004 Projection: 2nd place - Blue got great value
on almost every pick he made. The defending champ is going to be
tough to beat again this year.
I have been know to predict myself in first place,
of course I would. I picked the team and I did so thinking that
I was picking the best one. Looking over my draft I don't see any
player that I would turn around and draft again right now. I think
that I got steals in the first round, 1.05, Duece McAllister, fourth
round 4.04 Santana Moss, 7th round 7.05 Steve Smith, 15.05 Jake
Delhomme. I won't be bringing home the bowl 2 years in a row this
year unless all my starters get hurt.
Bowl Huggers Best Pick: 15.05 Jake Delhomme.
What a great value pick! This guy went to the Super Bowl last year
and has Steve Smith to throw to. He looks great in pre-season and
could be better than Chad Pennington whom I drafteof them.
Al Falcons Bowl Huggers ranked #1 after draft day!
Al Falcons rankings of the draft
- Bowl Huggers - Steve
- Big Blue - Ed
- WhoseYourDaddies - Greg
- Seminole Nation - Chuck
- Marauders - Dale
- Spoilers - Bill
- The Columbos (Red Ball Blitz)- Jeff
- Snoozers - Julian
